wow, I JUST answered another question like this two minutes ago, and this is what i put (you might not have to dye your hair "extreme" colors since you already have dark brown hair, but you might whant to look into some highlights):

why does everyone want the "emo" look?anyhow, if you want to do it right, first dye your hair an extreme color like bleach blond or jet black. i have seen a girl with brownish hair and that looked really cool too but she had some really bright highlights so if you don't want to dye your whole head, streak it. then, cut your hair. it doesn't have to be chin length or shorter. just get it shortish and straight with shaggy or choppy layers. use some mousse to style. have fun!
